Architectural
For the architectural segment, Cytec offers liquid resins for
interior and exterior decoration and protection products for
both the professional and do-it-yourself markets, including
paints, lacquers, varnishes and primers.
The biggest sustainability issue in this industry is the need
to reduce VOC emissions, with many regulations in the US and
the EU becoming increasingly strict.
Cytec is helping formulators offer products that meet these
valuable sustainability goals:
- RESYDROL® low VOC alkyd resins enable
formulation of paints that meet both stringent VOC and
demanding technical performance requirements. Stain
formulations are possible with 30g/L VOC and increased
durability.
- DAOTAN® low VOC, NMP-free polyurethane
dispersions
were specifically designed for high-demanding architectural
applications and also provide excellent abrasion and chemical
resistance.

Automotive
For the automotive sector, Cytec offers liquid resins for OEM
coatings applied during the manufacturing of passenger cars
and other transportation vehicles as well as automotive metal
and plastic components. We also provide resins designed for
use in refinish coatings, which are applied at repair shops.
In this sector, the industry is becoming more sustainable by
meeting and in some cases exceeding regulatory requirements
for VOC emissions reduction and by taking further steps
towards reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy
consumption and improving the safety of the work environment.
Cytec is helping the auto industry meet
sustainability goals:
- Solvent free and NMP-free polyurethane dispersions such as
DAOTAN® TW 7000/43WA provide outstanding chemical resistance
and flexibility to coatings for interior plastic parts,
ensuring compliance with upcoming and future regulations
- Amino crosslinkers have been designed specifically for 3-Wet
systems, which require significantly reduced energy
consumption in OEM coating shops
- Waterborne basecoats such as DAOTAN VTW 1262/35WA and clearcoats such as
MACRYNAL® SM 6810w/42WA allow formulation of
complete refinish coating systems with VOC levels well below
current regulatory thresholds

Industrial wood
For industrial wood manufacturing, Cytec offers liquid resins
for factory applied coatings including stains, sanding
sealers, pigmented finishes and clear topcoats.
Sustainability issues in this industry are focused on
reduction of VOC content, formaldehyde emissions and energy
consumption.
Cytec is helping wood product manufacturers with:
- Formaldehyde Free Crosslinker CYLINK®
NF 3041
CYLINK NF 3041 crosslinker has been developed for the
industrial wood coatings market. It is totally
formaldehyde free and passes Greengard®
testing, a known third party certification of indoor air
quality. CYLINK NF 3041 is used in place of the current
urea and melamine based crosslinkers and maintains the
appearance and performance of current systems. The
product cures very fast at ambient and heat cure with
low color and offers superior hardness development and
chemical resistance.
- CYMEL® LTC 10 is a new low temperature cure crosslinker that
delivers performance comparable to current amino/alkyd systems
while requiring less energy.
- Products under development will have reduced formaldehyde
emissions

Packaging
In the packaging sector, Cytec offers liquid resins for
coatings that are factory applied to metal substrates which
will be used for packaging for food, beverages, cosmetics and
industrial products. These coatings include both interior
coatings to protect the food from the metal packaging and
exterior coatings for aesthetics and brand identity.
A critical sustainability issue for this industry revolves
around the need to eliminate Bisphenol-A-di-glycidyl-ether
(BADGE) or Bisphenol A from packaging for consumer products.
Concerns have been raised about an endocrine effect caused by
these two monomers used in epoxy resins, and thus their use in
interior can coating systems has become an issue. Reduction of
VOC, formaldehyde and free monomer content are also important.
Cytec is helping the packaging industry meet these valuable
sustainability goals by offering:
A new family of US and EU compliant saturated polyester
resins including DUROFTAL® PE 6160/50MPAC and
VPE 6104/60MPAC
as replacements for high molecular weight epoxy resins in
interior metal packaging coatings for foodstuffs. In
combination with melamine or benzoguanamine resins, they can
also be used as backbone binders for high heat resistant and
flexible exterior can coating systems.
- Phenolic resin crosslinkers such as PHENODUR® PR 516/60B and
PR 899/60MPAC, designed as replacements for epoxy resin
systems, that provide equivalent performance without
containing BADGE or Bisphenol A. Ideal for use in coatings for
of 2-piece food cans and related products
- PHENODUR VPR 1785/50MP eco-friendly solventborne phenolic
resin with low free formaldehyde and monomer concentrations
- PHENODUR VPW 1942/52WA water borne phenolic resins for heat
curing of coatings with general industry applications
- Phenolic resins that can lower the curing temperature are
under development

Protective Coatings
For the protective coatings sector, Cytec offers liquid resins
for field applied systems used to protect steel and concrete
surfaces including bridges, parking decks and stadiums,
municipal buildings, power plants, chemical plants, offshore
oil and gas rigs and ships, cabins and engine rooms from
environmental damage.
In the protective and general industry area, VOC content and
benzyl alcohol exposure levels are becoming more stringent in
the US and Europe, respectively. The desire to meet societal
expectations for improved sustainability is causing a shift
away from conventional solventborne formulations to waterborne
coatings. Other advantages such as reduced odor and solvent
exposure, faster turnover of production lines, lower insurance
rates and reduced waste are providing further incentives for
this shift.
Cytec is helping protective coating manufacturers and their
customers meet these valuable sustainability goals by
offering:
- BECKOPOX™ EP 2384 solvent-free waterborne epoxy dispersion
and BECKOPOX™ VEH 2188 waterborne hydrophobic amine
hardener, which when used
together provide a low VOC (well below 50g/L) corrosion
resistant coating system that exceeds 1000 hours of salt fog
resistance.
