Cytec promotes a continuous improvement culture. The use of various
tools including Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma® and the
Workout Process assure we are operating efficiently and effectively at
all of our locations. We
have enhanced our programs to reduce our global environmental footprint,
including targets for energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) and waste reduction.
Our efforts to achieve operational excellence align with our
safety,
health and environment programs, which embrace the elements of our
sustainability strategy and our continuous improvement culture.
Additionally, investments in our manufacturing facilities leave us well
positioned to meet the demands of the future. The examples below
describe our successes in these areas.

Cytec's workout initiative-
achieving our safety
vision
Cytec expanded the use of the Workout Process to focus on the company’s safety
culture at our many manufacturing locations to empower employees and
contractors to create and maintain behaviors that help us to achieve a
zero injury workplace. This program will continue through 2012 and
beyond.

Six sigma at cytec -
waste reduction at kalamazoo
Cytec’s Kalamazoo, Michigan site was challenged to provide cost savings
and efficiency improvements for the manufacture of a crosslinking agent
for the use in paint formulations. A project was initiated to look at
possible changes to the process, and the use of Six Sigma methodologies
was applied to process studies to ensure constancy of purpose and
consistent performance outcomes. As a result, improvements to the
process were made which enabled the process reaction to be more
efficient, resulting in less waste. The project also yielded benefits
such as reduced raw material usage, reduction of lab sampling, fewer
equipment clean outs and improved filtration efficiencies.
Lean manufacturing at cytec -
reducing energy
use at our facilities
Cytec is using Lean Manufacturing tools at various locations to aid in
the reduction of energy use and greenhouse gases. Focused plant teams at
our facilities in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee; North Augusta, South
Carolina; Langley, South Carolina and Wallingford, Connecticut, have
been trained in the eight wastes, or Muda, identified by Lean
Manufacturing. The teams utilized the concepts from the training in "Muda
Walks" throughout the plant to identify energy waste. Additionally, the
principles of a visual factory are in use at our Wallingford plant and
Kalamazoo, Michigan plant. At these locations, stale monthly energy
reporting has been replaced with relevant process energy data. The
improved data collection results in faster recognition and resolution of
wasteful energy incidents. The use of Lean tools has resulted in
significant energy reduction, greenhouse gas reduction and cost
reduction.
Capital Investments – Supporting Sustainability
throughout the Value Chain
Cytec completed construction of our first carbon fibers prepreg
manufacturing facility in Asia in 2009. The Cytec Engineered Materials’
Fengxian, China plant allows Cytec to provide commercial aerospace
composite materials and significant logistics and supply chain value to
our customers, and contributes to the growth of the civil aerospace
industry in the region.
