PREFACE

Internet has become a mass-media phenomenon and it is evident that its influence upon legal information, in recent years, has been profound.

Nowadays, we can easily access laws, acts, bills, and decisions through the Net. Legal literature, public institutions, case law are also available over the Internet.

Fortunately, the greater part of the on-line legal information is free of charge so that material and texts can be gratuitously consulted and downloaded.

As examples, the Parliament provides free access to its legal data as well as private entities have set up networks (so called legal information no – profit) which offer, in real time, all sort of legal documentation.

The aim of this book is to help in the tracing of the Italian legal information available over the Internet.

Part 1 presents and describes the most relevant Web Sites providing legal material and texts.

Part 2 introduces few current and controversial discussions regarding the utilisation of the Internet within the public infrastructure such as the potential governmental elections on line, settlements of controversies through the Internet, virtual law firms. An entire chapter of the book is dedicated to the use of the Net to facilitate and render more rapid trials and civil proceedings. A report of the Italian Government for the development of an e-government is also provided.

The book is accompanied by a Cd-Rom which helps in surfing the Net providing a useful software and offers 800 links to Sites of legal interests. Among the other things, the Cd-Rom also provides a section called "Internet for law students" as well as a videoconference visible through Real Video player (www.real.com/)
