Address DEHM Standards with AEROSOL® Surfactants for
Over Print Varnish (OPV) Applications
Woodland Park, NJ – July 23, 2009 - Cytec Industries Inc. (NYSE:
CYT) today announces the introduction of two new OPV grade
products, AEROSOL® OT-75 OPV grade and OT-70 PG OPV
grade. These products offer very low residual diethyl hexyl
maleate (DEHM) in comparison to typical dioctyl sulfosuccinate
(DOSS) surfactants. DEHM is a byproduct of the manufacture of
DOSS, which is used as a wetting agent in OPV’s.
These new products are in response to the concerns expressed by
several European OPV manufacturers about the possible
modification of the German BfR (Federal Institute for Risk
assessment) that recommends setting a maximum of 50 ppb for the
migration of DEHM from packaging into food.
The new AEROSOL OT-75 and OT-70PG OPV grade surfactants will
have a maximum DEHM level of 0.15% “as is”, which assuming a
typical OPV coating thickness of 4-6 g/m2 wet and a maximum
AEROSOL surfactant level of 8% (as is) should allow customers to
meet the proposed new limits.
The new grades will be available for sampling from August, 17,
2009.
