Press Statement: Cytec Drogenbos Incident
On Friday, June 2, 2006, at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time
in Belgium, Cytec Industries Inc. experienced an incident at the
Drogenbos specialty chemicals manufacturing facility that
resulted in an employee fatality. Cytec deeply regrets the loss
of a dedicated coworker and is providing assistance and support
to the family as well as to the other employees at that site.
The incident occurred in a building that manufactures products
used in inks and various coatings applications. The employee, an
experienced operator who had been with the company for five
years, had been filling a process reactor with materials when
there was an explosion and subsequent flash fire in which he was
fatally injured.
A team of both local and corporate Safety, Health & Environment
and Engineering professionals has started an investigation.
Cytec is working with the local police and the Belgian Federal
Safety Authorities (Seveso Directive Agency) who oversee
occupational health and safety in Europe. Cytec will communicate
the results of the investigation when it is completed.
The operations in that building on the site have been shut down
until the investigators declare it is safe to begin operation
again.
