Cytec Implements Innovative Landfill Gas Project
“Jefferson Parish Landfill Gas Provides Alternative Energy Source”

February 16, 2006
Waggaman, LA – The Cytec Fortier Manufacturing Complex announced today a new landfill gas project that collects and pipes gas from the Jefferson Parish Landfill to its Sulfuric Acid Regen plant. The landfill gas project has been in the planning and construction phase for five years and has been a collaborative effort among Cytec, Renovar Energy, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program.

“This project is a win-win for everyone involved,” said David Lilley, Chairman, President and CEO of Cytec Industries Inc. “It will help reduce air emissions, benefit the local communities affected by landfill gas burn-off, promote conservation of non-renewable energy sources such as natural gas and help offset costs and expenses at the Jefferson Parish Landfill and at Cytec.”

Ten years ago, Jefferson Parish began investing $1.5 million in systems to capture gas produced at the landfill in order to comply with environmental regulations. The landfill gas consists of 50 percent methane and 50 percent carbon dioxide. Prior to the Cytec landfill project, the gas was captured and then burned off using a flare. The landfill gas is now being collected and reused as an alternative energy source at Cytec’s Acid Regen plant.

Renovar Energy designed and constructed the a gas compressor system and the four-mile pipeline that transfers gas from the Jefferson Parish Landfill to Cytec’s manufacturing unit. Renovar compresses the gas, filters it to remove particles, chills it to condense water and pipes it to Cytec. The pipeline was completed in late 2005 and startup of the project began in mid-January 2006. This is the third landfill gas project in Louisiana. The other two projects are located at landfills in Baton Rouge and Shreveport. All three projects were designed and constructed by Renovar Energy.

Located along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River on the Westbank of New Orleans, the Cytec Fortier Manufacturing Complex sits on 800 acres of historic land and is named for the Fortier family who managed a sugar and rice plantation on the site. The complex was built in 1952 and 1953, with site dedication taking place in June 1954.
